June 29th, 2010

With the World Cup capturing the imagination of Internet gambling fans around the world, online casino operator Paddy Power is taking bets on the popularity of the name Wayne, as in English football star Wayne Rooney. But England’s failure to advance part the round of sixteen means players wagering the name is given to a huge number of British babies will be facing long odds.

With a strong run in this year’s World Cup, there was speculation that along with dominant play by star striker Rooney, English couples would be thrilled to name newborns Wayne. But the anticipated hero failed to materialize, as England was sent home by a 4-1 loss to Germany in an elimination-round game. Rooney was scorned by Argentinian players upset that the English captain had been compared to their star, Messi. Diego Milito, one of several world-class players stuck on Argentina’s bench by the strength of the squad, said in an interview with the Daily Star that Rooney is “…maybe even a top 20 player in the world, but that doesn’t make him close to Messi.”

England continued its pattern of underachievement at the World Cup, as Rooney finished without a goal in four matches . Rooney’s three Premier League titles with Manchester United have only served to set him up for the backlash as disappointed English fans deal with their grief

If the name of “Wayne” made the top ten of baby boy names in Britian, odds had been set to give players 25-1 but expectations are sure to drop after this weekends disappointing loss at the hands of Germany.

The Guardian reported the online casino also carried plays on how many boys would receive the name Wayne, more than a baby a day favored to carry Ronney’s moniker. But gamblers are most likely to shift the odds, as the choice of less than 100 has become the second favorite, 2-1.
